Diabetic Retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in working age adults. All types of diabetic retinopathy are potentially blinding without appropriate treatment during the early stages of the disease. Unfortunately, a proportion of patients continue to have worsening retinopathy despite suitable treatment. Past research has established a link between genetics and the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy.
